E-bikes and e-scooters- fire safety advice

If you have an e-bike or e-scooter or thinking about getting one it is it essential to be aware of the potential fire risks.

E-bikes and e-scooters use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.   While most are very safe there is a risk of fire particularly for counterfeit, damaged or poorly modified e-bikes and e-scooters.

Since 2020, 10 people in the UK have died from fires linked to lithium-ion batteries and 190 people have been injured  These fires can also cause extensive damage to properties.

Scott’s story highlights the devastating impacts of lithium-ion battery fires:

Tips to help you stay safe

  • Battery safety:  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charge times and do not overcharge your battery.  Keep an eye on the battery temperature while charging. Avoid using the e-bike or e-scooter straight after charging because it can overheat. If the battery is hot after intensive use, let it cool before charging it.
  • Charging location: Charge your e-bike in a well-ventilated area. Never charge it near bedding, curtains or any other inflammable materials. Do not charge or store it in any communal area.
  • Charging: Always use a charger recommended by the e-bike or e-scooter manufacturer and buy it from a reputable seller.  Cheap or non-certified chargers may pose a fire hazard.  Never leave your e-bike or e-scooter unattended for long periods.   Do not leave it to charge while you are asleep or away from home.  Switch off the device and unplug the charger when not in use.
  • Check your e-bike or e-scooter regularly: Look for signs of damage, loose wires or unusual smells. If you notice anything that concerns you, stop using it immediately and have it checked by a professional.
  • Store safely: Always store your e-bike or e-scooter in a designated area away from heat sources and flammable items. Never leave it in communal areas, hallways, or stairwells, as they can obstruct escape routes in case of a fire.    Please remember: Residents cannot store or charge e-bikes in any communal area. Any e-bike or e-scooter stored in communal areas will be removed as part of the Clear Communal Spaces policy.
